Hewlett Packard Enterprise makes ProLiant servers, storage and networking for businesses of every size. ProLiant DL rack and ML tower servers run file shares, line-of-business applications and virtual machines in many Central PA offices. Bluetek sizes, installs, maintains and replaces HPE servers.
What it is
A ProLiant server is a business-grade computer built for 24/7 use, with redundant drives, optional redundant power supplies and iLO, a built-in remote management controller that lets us monitor and manage the server even when it’s powered off.
Typical small-business use
Small offices use an HPE tower or rack server to host Windows Server, file shares, accounting and ERP software, security camera recording or a few virtual machines with Hyper-V or VMware.
Problems we fix
We replace failed drives, fix RAID warnings, resolve iLO alerts, update firmware and drivers, fix slow servers and recover from failed updates. iLO lets us diagnose many hardware issues remotely.
Licensing and warranty quirks
Server hardware warranties are separate from software licensing. HPE Care Packs extend warranty and response times, and some firmware downloads require an active warranty or support entitlement. Windows Server also needs core-based licensing and client access licenses. We track all of it.
Firmware and security
We apply HPE Service Pack for ProLiant updates on a schedule, keep iLO patched and lock iLO down so it’s never exposed to the internet.
Sizing a new server
We size CPU, memory and storage for five years of growth, decide whether workloads should move to the cloud instead and quote clearly.
Migrations
We move data, applications and virtual machines from old servers to new ones over a weekend and test before Monday.
Backup and recovery
Every server we manage is backed up with Datto or Cove and tested.
End of life
When a server ages out of support, we plan the replacement before it fails.
How it fits our stack
HPE servers report into our monitoring, so failing drives and overheating trigger tickets automatically.
Virtualization
One HPE server can run several virtual machines, such as a file server, an application server and a domain controller. We set up Hyper-V or VMware, size resources for each and back up each virtual machine separately for fast restores.
Power and cooling
Servers need clean power and airflow. We install battery backups with automatic shutdown, check closet temperatures and add cooling or relocate the server when a closet gets too hot.
