Microsoft accounts and Microsoft 365 now support passkeys and passwordless sign-in. What it means for your business and how to roll it out.
Microsoft first let personal accounts drop the password in 2021. Since then it has gone further: new Microsoft accounts are passwordless by default, and passkeys work across Windows, iPhone and Android. For businesses, Microsoft Entra ID (the sign-in system behind Microsoft 365) supports passkeys, Windows Hello for Business and the Authenticator app.
Why it matters
Passwords get phished, guessed and reused. A passkey is tied to your device and to the real website, so a fake login page cannot capture it. That makes it one of the strongest defenses against the AI-written phishing showing up in inboxes now.
Options for your team
- Windows Hello for Business: face or PIN sign-in on company laptops.
- Microsoft Authenticator passkeys: sign in from your phone.
- Security keys: a small USB or NFC key, good for admins and shared workstations.
How to roll it out
- Make sure every user already has MFA.
- Turn on passkey methods in Entra ID.
- Start with admins and finance staff.
- Keep a recovery process for lost phones.
- Use conditional access to require strong sign-in for sensitive apps.
